What is Planta Europa Wake Up Call

Besides the official programme, Planta Europa conferences offered plenty of opportunities to network with plant conservationists from across pan-Europe and present their work in Wake Up Call

What is the problem?
Wild plants in Europe are under severe threat with a significant loss of plant species and habitat taking place. Although being a subject of concern, plant conservation has less support from politicians and the public than other threatened groups, such as pandas, whales or birds.
The public is, however, very concerned about the wild plants disappearing from the local countryside around them.

What is the Wake Up Call?

The Wake Up Call for wild plants in Europe is a framework to communicate the need for better protection of our wild plants to key decision makers and European citizens. It is a campaign developed by Planta Europa to be implemented in 2008 together with Planta Europa member organisations throughout pan-Europe and down to local level.
The message that will be communicated during this campaign is simple:
• Wild plants in Europe are declining rapidly
• The European public is concerned about the problems at hand destroying their heritage
• European and national decision makers must act now to halt this trend
• A clear, measurable and easily understandable roadmap towards a better protection for Europe's flora does exist.Planta Europa is coordinating its implementation and supporting governments in taking necessary steps
• Everybody can do something to rescue wild plants in their countryside activities

Voting for plants
The European public will be voting for a flower / plant that is missing from their landscape and that best represents their region or country. The voting will be taking place in spring 2008. Based on this vote, threatened flagship species in each region or country will be selected and used in media coverage and the promotion of the Wake Up Call.
Local and regional projects
Throughout Europe small scale local and regional educational and awareness-raising activities organised by member organisations will be taking place. The nature and scope of these projects is dependent on the capacity of the organisation promoting the event.
